I totally agree with you that what is happening around us these days is really scary. There have been times when I too, have been quite scared wondering how it would be to raise my two children (a boy and a girl) in times like these.
Though there is hardly any large scale solution for the society as such, I do believe that on a small or individual front (family level), there are few steps that can be taken. We can, as parents, try and create a safe, loving and friendly atmosphere at home so that the child needn't depend on social network to feel loved or 'like'd. We should try to make them feel at ease with us and make sure that they know that we are always there for them no matter what. It always helps if they have the secure feeling that they can come talk to us about anything.
We may not be able to change the society as a whole, but we can definitely try to bring up confident, well behaved individuals who are aware of the pros and cons of their actions.
