But at times it creates misunderstanding and people might think that the person is very haughty.
The virtue of speaking well, rightly and effectively also includes the capacity to stay silent, when situation demands so. Besides earning respect and acceptance, needless problems can be avoided because one is a slave of the words he utters while being a master of those he chooses not to speak.
I also feel it is better to be silent to show our anger than blurt out words which can’t be taken back. Just like shots from a gun or a bow can't be taken back spoken words also can't be taken back.
Our elders when fasting on Ekadasi day also used to keep mauna vrath while chanting Lord’s name inwardly. I have seen my brother in law practicing this.
Hindu saints and scriptures do emphasize the importance of serene surroundings as an aid to introspection; they stress more the cultivation of silence within. Outer peace is simply a means to help us find inner silence.
Avvaiyar, describes this inward stillness and solitude as the most sublime experience, Paul Brunton in his “A Message From Arunachala,” elaborates on the efficacy of such virtues.
Although Sri Ramana Maharshi was happy to give his verbal teachings to anyone who asked for them, he frequently pointed out that his ‘silent teachings’ were more direct and more powerful. These ‘silent teachings’ consisted of a spiritual force, which seemed to emanate from his form, a force so powerful that he considered it to be the most direct and important aspect of his teachings. Instead of giving out verbal instructions on how to control the mind, he effortlessly emitted a silent power, which automatically quietened the minds of everyone in his vicinity. The people who were attuned to this force report that they experienced it as a state of inner peace and well being; in some advanced devotees it even precipitated a direct experience of the Self.
The Father of our nation- Mahatma Gandhi has written in his autobiography- ‘The Story of My Experiments with Truth’ that he was very shy during his childhood. He was not able to express himself properly and whenever he would have to deliver speeches, he couldn’t utter a word. Firstly, he thought that this silence was his weakness. But later in his biography, he has written that this quality has proved to be a boon for him. His silence became his power! In many of the non- violent protests led by him, he fought, but not by shouting aloud; but by being silent. He has said that a person who is silent has less chances of speaking anything that is unnecessary or may hurt others. This justifies that silence has greater significance than speech. Silence helps us to know our inner self.
I feel it is better to be a man/woman of few words than to be a chatterbox.
