Hi Madhu,

Don't be scared. According to shastra it is called 'pragya apraadh'.. violation of any sadhana related rules. You have to take the broken idol and leave it in flowing water (like river etc) with flowers. Then do 'Vidivat punarsthapana' of a new idol and pray to forgive the pragya apraadh. And then you can resume the regular pooja/prayers.
