Wrapper Ramblings

Recently I happened to view the above link about gift wrappers. The idea resulted in random thoughts.

Some 10 years back all the grocery items were packed in triangular prism foldings of news papers and rice and dal used to be kept in big gunny bags in the shops. Now there is a sea of change. All are packed in convenient consumer lots in polythene covers exhibited neat in all the shops.

It is altogether a different issue that along with rava and maida we get some creatures/worms too free of cost.

The saying'maanaththaik kaakka aadai'( a cloth is needed just to cover us) has been transformed to'Aal pathi, aadai pathi"( people are valued more for their dress)

Gift wrapping has become an art. When toys are packed in attractive coloured boxes, children start playing with the box rather than the toy. When we probe a little further , certain Forewords/reviews on books or films are more interesting than the original writing/movie.When a branded good is released so much of importance is given to the name of the product, ads are seen inviting slogans and names .

When a classic work 'Arthamulla Indhu matham' was written by Kannadasaon, my mother-in-law refused to read the treasure as she considered that the author, who had been an addict was not eligible to preach which he didn't practise. On our insistence she read the book and appreciated with hesitation.

I vividly remember her remarks"When a sweet payasam with 'gama gama 'ilaichi aroma is served in an aluminum tumbler, nobody will have a tendency to touch the tumbler, leave alone tasting.Even if a kheer of lesser quality is served in a silver tumbler or a designed steel tumbler, one would love to taste.".

Even in cooking, final garnishing and way of serving are more important in addition to the taste.Decoration ,though may look artificial or superficial, cannot be set aside and this aspect is much taken care of in jewellery shops and ready made garments packing and popular restaurants.

When one gets a gift wrapped in paper,he/she is curious to see the gift. The wrapper is torn to pieces and thrown to dustbin.

But a cloth wrapped one is dual gift. The wrapper can be reused again and again either to

wrap another gift,or as a handkerchief ,scarf or small table cloth or even as a pillow cover."

The wrapper itself is so captivating. The gift would be really very valuable"people may assess.

Sometimes wrapper brings special cheers and everlasting joy.

My daughter in Singapore purchased onions wrapped in old news paper. After placing the onion in the basket she just scrambled and threw away the paper. Her 3 year old daughter picked it up ,made a paper boat and played in the rain. the paper was brought back. The child placed it on the sofa and paper became dry.Next day my son-in-law was about to throw the paper. An advt struck him. It was about a child adoption agency named'Ammaan'.He ignored it as it was assumed to refer to middle east nations such as Jordan, Ammaan.

Next day the child placed some chips on the paper. My daughter felt why the wrapper should come round and round the family .She just telephoned to the agency. Somebody on the line, Lakshmi by name responded. It was actually Amman ( Goddess)numerologically spelt Ammaan.

Then things moved fast. Within a month they adopted a male child , a few days old.The child was figuratively addressed as 'wrapper boy' or onion baby. Now the boy is 10 years old.

In this connection I am reminded of a story I heard in my school days.

A guru, head of a famous mutt was looking for a suitable successor who would carefully handle the mutt's resources without wasting the same.

One day a disciple came and requested the guru to give him a new dress as his earlier one had become old.The guru obliged.

After a few days the guru asked" what did you do with the old dress?'

" I am using it as my bed"

What did you do with the old bed?'

"I am using it as window curtain as protection from glare.'

" What did you do with the old window curtain?'

" I am using it as a kitchen cloth for lifting hot vessels".

" what happened to old kitchen cloth?"

" I am using it for cleaning the floor."

"What did you do with the old floor cleaning cloth?"

"I tore them and use as wick for the oil lamp. When light is not required, I

just put off the lamp'

No wonder, the disciple was chosen as next successor.

I am surprised that a small youtube programme is capable of kindling so much of our thinking process.
