Increase in life expetancy

A hundred and seventeen year old Japanese woman who was supposed to be the oldest in world expired.

Thanks to the rapid advance in medical and technological field which has increased life expectancy. In India also life expectancy has increased. Simple fractures to heart surgeries to cancer to organ transplant mind boggling advance in medical field. Super speciality hospitals for the affordable rich and health centers and government hospitals for the poor and nursing homes for the middle class are really doing a good job. Health insurance schemes also is a boon.

I believe only lesser percentage of people will reap the benefits of increase in life expectancy. Blessed are those who are revered and loved by the family in old age.

Even economically well off people, if left alone to fend for themselves will feel the loneliness.

In the present materialistic world with changed family values one wonders whether longevity could be considered as a boon. There is no place for elders in nuclear family system. Even if there are exceptions due to the generation gap it could cause friction in the family. There is lot of difference in life style including food habits. Physical dependency becomes challenging if the financial status is poor. Other than that when father is in eighties, the son also becomes old and has his own ailments.

After seeing many of our elderly relatives mostly ladies suffering in their old age due to ill health

and pushed from one son's house to another I feel longevity is a curse.

According to a recent survey in some states women outlive men and so there are more widows than widowers. We recently read in the news papers the Supreme Court expressing concern over the pathetic state of the vrindavan widows and directing the UP government to chalk out a program for their welfare.

What is your take on this?
