Saturday morning, a man named Eric Semborski was working his job at an ice rink in Philadelphia. Two hours later, he was playing in the NHL.
The Chicago Blackhawks were coming to town that day to play the Philadelphia Flyers and they just lost their starting goalie, Corey Crawford, to an unexpected appendectomy surgery. With only one other goalie on the roster, the Blackhawks needed a back-up ASAP, and their minor league team was too far away in Rockford, Illinois. Enter Eric Semborski.
Semborski had played goalie for four years on a club team at Temple University and somehow the Flyers got that info to the Blackhawks. They called Eric and offered him the job for the day.
He got there late because he had to run home to get his gear, but Semborski got to play on the ice with the Blackhawks during warm-ups.
"I was a bit rusty," he said. "But no matter how much I play, I'm not going to be ready for them. “
Semborski got some autographed pucks, a jersey and something he’ll remember for the rest of his life.
